What is a Nolemy record?
In brief
A record is a check that someone chose to make permanent: the claim, the finding, the gap, the friction, the testimony, and a confidence label, author-signed on the witness’s own device and fingerprinted. Alter one character and the signature stops verifying, in public. Evidence that can be quietly edited is just content. A record is built so it can never be quietly edited.
The shape of a record#
Stephen Toulmin wrote that “an argument is like an organism,” with a gross anatomy and a fine one. A record is an argument with its anatomy printed. Open a live one and read it top to bottom: the claim under examination, quoted exactly. The operational reality, one sentence, the thing the evidence actually supports. The reality gap, promised against observed. Hidden friction: the mechanism that only shows up in lived use. The exception, kept even when it cuts against the finding. Then the testimony, numbered, dated, each quote linked to the thread it came from. And in the margin, the apparatus: a file number, a category, a witness, a fingerprint, a trend, a confidence label.
Every element answers a challenge you might raise, which is what an argument owes you (the verdicts guide covers the two most neglected organs, the qualifier and the exception).
How one comes to exist#
Three steps, and the first one is a refusal. There is no text box. A witness can only publish a report the engine itself produced, by reference to it. That single design choice deletes an entire abuse class: planted stories, pasted screeds, fabricated quotes under our letterhead. If the pipeline never generated it, it can never be filed.
Second, the signature. When a witness publishes, their device signs the exact bytes of the record with a private key derived from a recovery phrase that never leaves their machine. We hold the public half only, which is enough to check a signature and useless for forging one. Nobody, including us, can sign as you.
Third, the fingerprint. The published record gets a content hash, printed on the page and re-checked every time anyone loads it. The check runs in your browser, against the author’s public key, without asking us. Change a comma in the record and the verification fails in front of whoever is looking. Tamper-evident means something narrower and stronger than it sounds: a record can be removed, and its address then serves a notice instead of pretending the record never existed. What it can never be is quietly rewritten.
What permanence buys#
Content is editable, rankable, and for sale. That is the definition of the modern web: the product page resets to zero, the five-star average swallows last month’s disaster, the thread that answered you slides to page nine and out of the index. A record is built to do none of that. It is fixed at filing, addressed forever, and immune to the polish cycle, which is why the ChatGPT guide can compare a chat answer that vanished on tab-close with a record you are able to audit today, character for character.
Permanence also solves the citation problem. Cite a Reddit thread and you cite a moving target: comments get deleted, edited, brigaded, and the URL you saved answers differently next year. Cite a record and you cite a fixed artifact that aggregates the pattern across many threads, preserves the quotes it stood on, and carries its own proof of integrity. To cite one: give the URL, and for the careful, the fingerprint beside it. Anyone can paste that fingerprint at the verify page and confirm the words are the filed words.

What a record refuses to be#
A record carries zero verdicts: evidence and its label, with the reasons in the verdicts guide. It is also a deliberately poor review, since a review is an authored opinion and a record confines the author’s judgment to the single act of filing. Permanence comes with an exit: anyone can flag a record, the standards are public, and a record that fails them gets removed. And when one is wrong, the fix happens in the open, as a removal or a published correction. The quiet edit is the one move the format physically lacks.
The objection#
Mechanism claims verified against the shipping publish path (prepare/sign/commit, Ed25519) and the public verify page. Anatomy walked on a live record: 56 reports, 9 platforms, author-signed. Toulmin, The Uses of Argument, p. 87.
