Guides / Best-of lists
Why does every “best of” list pick the same product?
In brief
Because most rankings share a funding model, and the funding decides what gets ranked. A television referral pays about 2%; a VPN referral pays up to 40% of the sale. Google now polices the resulting content as site reputation abuse. The fix is older than the problem: find the disclosure line, then go ask people who paid retail.
The convergence#
Search any product category with the word best
and a year, and read the top five results. The same two or three names sit at the top of nearly every list, in nearly the same order, wearing nearly the same superlatives. Two explanations are available. One is comforting: the best product simply wins everywhere, the way the same theorem gets proved in every textbook. The other explanation has published rate tables.
Follow the rates#
Most rankings are funded by referral commissions, and the industry says so in writing. Wirecutter’s own About page: When you buy through our links, we may earn a commission
. The disclosure line is the most honest sentence on the page. What it omits is the gradient. Amazon’s published Associates table pays 2% on televisions, 3% on home goods and headphones, 4.5% on kitchen. VPN vendors run their own programs at a different altitude: Surfshark’s affiliate page advertises Commissions starting at 40% revenue share of new sales
.
Within one category, the flat rate cannot pick the winner by itself. Across categories, it decides where the lists get written at all. High-commission products grow forests of rankings while two-percent products get a paragraph, and from the reader’s side of the page that difference is indistinguishable from consensus.
The HouseFresh file#
The inside view arrived in February 2024, when HouseFresh, a small site that lab-tests air purifiers, published an audit of the giants outranking it. Its claims were specific: a BuzzFeed list of 22 purifiers whose team, HouseFresh wrote, doesn’t even pretend to test the air purifiers
; a Better Homes & Gardens top pick from a manufacturer that had filed for bankruptcy while facing false-advertising class actions; a publisher whose claimed test count went from zero to 38 devices in weeks. By May 2024 HouseFresh reported its own reward: daily Google visitors down from 4,000 to 200 since October 2023, under a heading that puts the latest algorithm update’s damage alone at 91%, while the lists it had named kept their rankings.
The referee has since acknowledged the game. On 5 March 2024 Google announced a spam policy for site reputation abuse: third-party content parked on a host site to manipulate Search rankings by taking advantage of the first-party site’s ranking signals
, enforced from 5 May 2024 and tightened that November. A search engine writing rules against rented reputations is as close as the industry comes to admitting how the lists were built.
A worked example#
Take the steepest-commission category and its perennial number one, and check the claim the lists keep making against people with no rate card. We ran NordVPN is the best VPN
through the pipeline on 11 July 2026; 60 admissible reports came back across ten platforms. The range is real: plenty of users call it decent and safe. The pattern underneath is also real:
“The article makes it sounds like NordVPN is best at marketing, but that’s not a great reason to choose a VPN.”
“My understanding is that NordVPN has a somewhat checkered reputation including a data breach in 2018. The linked list of best VPNs also effectively lists NordVPN twice since Nord now owns Surfshark.”
“When it works, NordVPN is fine, but in the last 2 weeks I’ve had nothing but issues with the VPN constantly dropping out, slow download speeds…”
“For a while NordVPN was great. Now it seems ExpressVPN is the best. I have also used Private Internet Access, which is good…”
The second quote is the whole essay in one sentence: a best-VPN list that carries the same company twice, because the ranked brands share an owner. The lists arrive at one answer, the people who paid retail arrive at another, and of the two groups only the first files a disclosure.
